Brouwersdam

Brouwersdam is a working Delta Works dyke that happens to be the Netherlands' number-one kite spot: park the car on the dam road, rig on the flat, tideless Grevelingenmeer lake side or the tidal North Sea side depending on wind direction, and ride. It's not a resort or a village - there's no spot-side town, no beach bars strip, no palm-tree fantasy - just a 6.5km strip of asphalt, dune and beach shared with Dutch, Belgian and German weekend riders, wingfoilers and kite-buggy locals. Great for beginners to advanced freestylers/foilers who want reliable European wind without flying long-haul, and for anyone happy to self-drive and self-cater; bad for anyone chasing a party scene, warm water, or a walkable spot-town, since you base yourself in Ouddorp or Renesse and drive in every session. Cold water (wetsuit year-round) and a distinctly un-tropical, low-key Dutch-outdoorsy vibe are part of the deal.

Editor's brief

Three facts orient everything. Brouwersdam is not one spot but two waters split by a road: the tideless Grevelingenmeer inside, ~100 m of shallow flat water that goes mirror-smooth on spring tides, and the tidal North Sea outside with real current on flood and ebb. Riding is confined between the yellow buoys, and inside that sits a deep-water kitefoil-only zone where the NKV's wording leaves no room: 'Hier niet met je twintip varen of opstappen!' Only N, NW, W and SW work. That is why 6.5 km of launches exists, and why a car does. Logistics are duller than the record implied. Parking at every launch is free; the cost is arriving before mid-morning on a good-wind weekend. From Rotterdam The Hague it is 52 km, 42 min, EUR 9-14 of fuel - or metro D to Spijkenisse Centrum plus bus 104 to the Port Zelande stop on the dam, EUR 16-20 in 3h16m. Carless works; it just pins you to one launch, which defeats the spot. Taxi is EUR 170-210, only sane split four ways with boardbags. The gear trap nobody mentions: the big watersport centre at Ossenhoek 1 rents windsurf, wing and foil only - no kites, no twin-tips, at any price. Verified kite rental at the dam is Kiteschool Brouwersdam, EUR 120/day on Duotone or EUR 499 for a 15-hour card. Past four riding days, fly your own quiver. If you rent a foil, the waiver excludes foil damage entirely - everything else caps at EUR 50 per incident, the front wing does not. Yart, its six-apartment satellite, is the quiet self-catering pick: full kitchen, free WiFi, free parking, linens in, free cancellation to 21 days out. Medical, corrected: from Ouddorp it is Van Weel-Bethesda, Stationsweg 22, Dirksland, 0187 60 73 00 - the island's only hospital, and it has an A&E. From Renesse it is not Zierikzee; Borrendamme 10 is outpatient clinics only. The nearest 24/7 emergency department in Zeeland is ADRZ Goes. Know which side of the dam you are on before you need to know. The decisions: which side you ride, set by the tide table more than the forecast - the wind is frontal, blows all day or not at all, and there is no thermal window to sleep in for. Then: fly gear or pay EUR 120/day. Sleep on the water or in Ouddorp/Renesse and drive in. And whether late June is a feature or a disaster - Concert at Sea puts a festival on the dam, and its exact 2026 dates are still contradictory across our own sources.

What nobody tells you first

There is a dedicated kitefoil-only deep-water launch zone separate from the normal twin-tip beach launch - twin-tips and standard launches are prohibited there, so know which zone you're in.
Only N, NW, W and SW winds are considered safe/rideable at this spot - other directions don't work.
The North Sea (seaward) side has real current, especially on a rising tide, and is considered the more advanced side versus the flat, tideless Grevelingenmeer lake side.
Parking along the dam fills up by mid-morning on good-wind weekends in season - arrive early.
It's cold-water kiting essentially year-round; budget for a proper wetsuit (4-5mm Nov-Mar).
The Netherlands is pricier than most southern-Europe kite destinations - this isn't a budget trip.
The late-June Concert at Sea festival weekend brings heavy crowds and traffic right onto the dam road - check dates if you want to avoid (or catch) it.
The big on-site watersport centre (Ossenhoek 1) rents windsurf, wing and foil gear only - not kites or twin-tips. If you were planning to fly with hand luggage and rent everything, your only verified kite-set rental at the dam is Kiteschool Brouwersdam at EUR 120/day, or gear bundled into a KBC/school course.
The nearest hospital to the Zeeland side of the dam is NOT Zierikzee. ADRZ Zierikzee (Borrendamme 10) is outpatient clinics only; the only 24/7 emergency department in Zeeland is ADRZ Goes ('s-Gravenpolderseweg 114), roughly an hour's drive south. From the Ouddorp side, the island hospital Van Weel-Bethesda in Dirksland (Stationsweg 22, 0187 60 73 00) is much closer and has an A&E.

Getting there & getting around

Wind/kite season runs roughly April-October, with May-September the most reliable and warmest window (air 20-25C, water 18-22C in summer). August is the busiest month for crowds. Autumn brings Atlantic storms and the strongest, most powerful sessions but a smaller, hardcore local crowd. Winter is cold (air 5-10C) with only a handful of dedicated regulars still riding. Outside kiting, the late-June Concert at Sea music festival (25-27 June 2026) draws large non-kite crowds and traffic to the dam.

Brouwersdam was built 1962-1971 as the 7th Delta Works structure, part of the Netherlands' post-1953-flood-disaster (1,836 deaths) flood defence programme; the road across it opened in 1973.
Closing the dam trapped seawater into what became the Grevelingenmeer - now the largest saltwater lake in Western Europe - which was made brackish, then partly re-salinated via the Brouwerssluis sluice installed in 1978, creating the tideless flat water kiters use today.

A classic trip is 7-10 days based in Ouddorp (or Renesse for more nightlife), flying into Rotterdam or Amsterdam and renting a car, riding different launch points along the 6.5km dam depending on the day's wind direction - flat-water lake-side sessions for freestyle/foil practice, North Sea side for chop/waves when conditions and experience allow - with a day or two tacked on in Rotterdam or Amsterdam for city time before or after.
