NEOM
NEOM/Sharma is not a normal travel destination yet - it's an active Saudi megaproject on the Red Sea coast, mostly under construction, with the flagship tourism piece (Sindalah island resort) still invite-only and closed to the general public as of 2025-2026. This suits only very determined pioneers or those with project/industry access, not independent travelers looking to book a normal beach holiday.

How it scores for you
Persona presets weight the scores below for one kind of rider. Each carries the weakest confidence among its parts — never an average that hides a gap.
score-spec v1 (shrunk to coverage) — a score built on little evidence is pulled toward the middle rather than shown as a confident extreme. Hover a tile for its confidence.

What nobody tells you first
- Alcohol is illegal in Saudi Arabia - don't bring any in, it will be confiscated and can carry fines/jail time
- NEOM is not set up for independent or budget tourism as of 2025-2026 - Sindalah, the one operating resort, remains invitation-only
- The project has been dramatically scaled back recently (Trojena's ski component cancelled March 2026; NEOM absent from 2026 pre-budget statements) - confirm current access before planning around it
- This is a live construction site with well-documented labor and human-rights controversies, not a resort in the ordinary sense

Getting there & getting around

| car needed | yes |
| road quirks | NEOM spans a huge stretch of Tabuk province as an active construction zone - expect checkpoints, restricted areas, and roads still being built alongside roads in use. |

Practical
| money | Saudi riyal (SR), pegged at 3.75 per USD; cash-based outside major hotels, smaller banks may not take foreign cards |

| language | Arabic; English used in tourism/business contexts |
| safety | No NEOM-specific advisories found; standard Saudi rules apply (see gotchas). Saudi Arabia is also noted to have some of the world's highest road accident rates. |
| visa hint | Saudi Arabia offers an e-visa for 50+ nationalities (~SR535, 1-year multi-entry, max 90-day stays) or a visa waiver (~SR150, single-entry, max 180 days); no NEOM-specific tourist entry process was found in sources - Israeli citizens are denied entry. |

History & trivia
- NEOM's projected cost has grown from an initial ~$1.6bn estimate to reported figures in the trillions for the full vision, with major elements scaled back sharply
- An internal audit reportedly found evidence of deliberate financial manipulation by project management
- The megaproject's construction has been linked to a reported ~21,000 migrant worker deaths since 2017 and the forced relocation of roughly 20,000 people, including Howeitat tribe members sentenced to death for resisting displacement - worth knowing before treating this as just a kite trip
What riders say
Wind micro-knowledge
Open questions — know the answer? Propose an edit
- No rider-forum, Reddit, or blog content could be retrieved this session (see batch-level tooling_note).
- Given NEOM's access restrictions, it's unclear whether any independent kiter has actually ridden Sharma and posted about it publicly, or whether all existing chatter is project/marketing-sourced rather than rider-sourced — this needs a dedicated search pass, not assumed to be silence-by-tooling-failure alone.
- Given NEOM/Sharma is described in the batch as an active megaproject still under construction, is there any rider-generated content at all yet, or is this destination premature for a UGC mining pass?
- Needs a retry via a working search path since none was available this session.

Itinerary idea
Given the lack of independent tourism access, treat a Sharma trip as project/industry access rather than a bookable holiday until infrastructure opens further - verify current entry status directly before planning.
