Sal Rei - Boa Vista
Sal Rei is a small, low-key former colonial port town that doubles as Boa Vista's entire kite infrastructure - almost every school, camp apartment and kite-adjacent bar sits along the 10km Estoril beach strip just south of town or in the town itself. It's genuinely walkable, safe by African-Atlantic standards, and has just enough restaurants and a couple of real bars to give you an evening beyond the kite session, but it is not a party island - if you want livelier nightlife and a bigger kite scene, that's Sal island (Santa Maria/Ponta Preta), a short flight or ferry away. Good for intermediate/advanced freeriders and wave riders, families, and beginners taking lessons in the flat lagoon-like water; less good for anyone wanting big nightlife, a car-free upmarket resort experience, or a fully paved, over-touristed setup.

Editor's brief
Three facts orient everything else about Sal Rei. One: the season is October/November to May, and it is not a soft shoulder either side - Kitekriol simply closes June to September, which is the clearest evidence anyone publishes that the summer here is not worth a plane ticket; peak is January to March at 15-30 knots, against a 13-knot annual mean at the airport station. Two: the flat water off Praia Carlota is flat because the Ilheu de Sal Rei blocks the swell, not because the wind is friendly - IKSurfmag calls the town beach side-off to off and gusty, Kitekriol calls its own wind offshore, and both schools sell rescue cover (two boats at one, two rescues a day for EUR 115/week at the other). Three: the whole trip fits inside a 1 km walking radius - health centre 550 m from the beach, pharmacy 400 m, police 600 m, banks, port and both of the island's only two petrol stations all in Sal Rei. The logistics truth is that the airport is 5-6 km away and the fare is a flat EUR 10-12 per car (EUR 27-30 only to RIU Touareg), that Caixa Economica has a counter at the airport on weekdays until 15:00 so you can land with escudos, and that the old 'three ATMs on the island' warning is stale - five are mapped, plus BCA, Caixa and Banco Interatlantico branches. You do not need a car; you need a 4x4 for one day, and a shared excursion with a driver at ~EUR 60 beats a EUR 90/day rental with a EUR 400 deposit. The best bases are the direct-booked kite stock the hotel aggregators never show: Ca Julie beachfront on Praia Estoril from EUR 65, Ca Madeira or Ca Greta 30 m back from EUR 50, Casa Boteto at 300 m from EUR 25, all with kitchens, WiFi and airport pickup through Kitekriol; Boavistakite's Ca Nicola sits 50 m from the water but has ceiling fans, not AC; KatlantiK's Beach House Deluxe is the one verified air-conditioned beachfront apartment. What nobody tells you: gear rental is conditional - BKSA/IKO Level 2 or the school's own course, your own third-party liability insurance, ID and cash for the deposit, or you are buying lessons instead; at EUR 70/day for a complete setup versus EUR 250 a month to store your own, the break-even is about four riding days; and from 01 January 2026 some nationalities need a visa issued before arrival, transit included. The decisions the traveller must make are these. Bring your own quiver and pay storage, or accept EUR 70/day. Book direct with a school and get the pickup, the storage and the local fixer bundled, or book a Booking.com hotel and pay more for a front desk. Take the town-front flat water with a school watching you, or hire a 4x4 day and go to Ponta Antonia and Varandinha - where 500 m downwind is open ocean or cliffs. And do not schedule the trip around turtles: nesting runs June to October, exactly when the wind does not.

- Unfamiliar taxi drivers can quote tourists 40-60% above the normal fare - always agree the price before getting in
- Praia Carlota's offshore reef breaks up the swell but is exposed at low tide - watch your feet/board near it
- Reports of daytime robberies have increased on isolated beach paths, notably toward Santa Monica - don't walk deserted routes alone with valuables
- The Saharan harmattan haze (roughly Dec-Mar) can cut visibility and coat gear in fine dust
- Turtle nesting season (June-October) closes off parts of some beaches at night and falls outside the reliable wind window, so it's a poor time to plan a kite-focused trip
- Gear rental is conditional, not automatic: Boavistakite hires only to BKSA/IKO Level 2 riders (or graduates of its own 2-3 day course) who hold their own third-party liability insurance and bring ID plus cash for the deposit. Arrive without a cert card or insurance and you are buying lessons, not renting.
- From 01 January 2026 nationals of a listed group of countries need a visa issued before arrival in Cabo Verde, including for transit and airport stopovers - the EASE portal publishes the country list. Check it before booking rather than assuming visa-on-arrival.
