Fuseta Lagoon

Fuseta Lagoon is the flat-water kitesurf area at Praia da Fuseta-Ria, beside Fuseta village in the Ria Formosa Natural Park east of Olhão. The draw is shallow sandy water, protected lagoon geometry and an afternoon thermal that local guides commonly describe in the mid-teens to mid-20-knot range. It is a progression spot first: lessons, freeride, freestyle, foiling and controlled big-air practice make more sense here than wave hunting. Tides matter a lot; mid and high tide are the safer planning window, while sources disagree on how usable low tide is. The launch is not large, so peak summer afternoons require quick rigging, clean launching and active traffic awareness. During the bathing season, guide sources say kiting is confined to the marked zone between the island and mainland and the main Ria Formosa channel must be avoided because of boat traffic. Faro Airport is roughly a 30-minute drive away, making the spot easy to combine with Olhão, Tavira, Ilha de Faro or wider Algarve trips.

Rules

2026: Fuseta-Ria official bathing/Blue Flag season is 01/06/2026-30/09/2026. Kite-specific guide sources state that since 2016 kitesurfing during bathing season is allowed only inside the designated zone between the island in front of Praia da Fuseta-Ria and the mainland/coast, and that riders must not cross the Ria Formosa main channel; I did not find a 2026 municipal or capitania kite-zone map confirming the exact boundaries online.
