Lagoa de Albufeira
Lagoa de Albufeira is a real and active kite spot on the Sesimbra coast, close enough to Lisbon for day trips but more dependent on a car than the city beaches. The appeal is the split setup: flat, shallow lagoon water for learning and freestyle, with the Atlantic beach just over the sand barrier for waves when the sea and wind are suitable. The best-supported wind pattern is the summer Nortada, most often N to NW and strongest in the afternoon; local and English kite sources converge on May to September as the prime season. The spot is not legally wide open in summer: the 2026 bathing season runs from 4 June to 13 September, and the current Capitania edital bans kitesurf in part of the lagoon during that period. Meira Pro Center, the main resident school, states that its lessons move to Costa da Caparica during bathing season, which is an important practical correction for visiting beginners. Outside the peak swimmer season, it remains one of the Lisbon region's better flat-water progression spots, but riders still need to respect conservation zones, water-level changes and the ocean-side current/surf risk.

Rules
2026: Portaria n.º 204-A/2026/1 fixes the official bathing season for Lagoa de Albufeira and Lagoa de Albufeira-Mar as 4 June to 13 September 2026. 2026/current AMN page lists Capitania do Porto de Setubal Edital n.º 97/2022 as applicable; that edital prohibits kitesurf during bathing season in Lagoa da Albufeira in the zone west of the alignment between Casa do Infantado on the south bank (38°30'31.23"N, 009°10'30.86"W) and ruins on the north bank (38°30'54.58"N, 009°10'36.98"W), and also bars kitesurf within 300 m of concession bathing beaches/corridors and more than 2000 m offshore without boat support. 2019: Aviso n.º 12492/2019/POC-ACE lagoon regulation makes Lagoa Pequena and Lagoa da Estacada an interdicted conservation zone, makes Lagoa Grande a permanent conditioned-use zone, allows non-motorized recreational navigation only under the regulation, and allows authorities to reduce or suspend activities for water-quality or safety reasons. 2026 local-school operational note: Meira Pro Center says its kitesurf lessons move from Lagoa de Albufeira to Costa da Caparica during bathing season.Tips

- If you are learning, contact Meira or another local school first because school operations move during bathing season and the lagoon has restricted zones.
- Use the lagoon side for flat-water practice and only go to the ocean side if you are comfortable with beach-break waves, rips and self-rescue.
- Arrive early on summer weekends; parking on the south side fills and public transport is weak for carrying kite gear.
- Avoid Lagoa Pequena, Lagoa da Estacada and any signed conservation/wildlife areas.
