Rhosneigr
Widely regarded as the UK's leading kitesurf town, Rhosneigr sits on the southwest coast of Anglesey around Traeth Crigyll, a wide, sandy, west-facing beach popular with windsurfers and sailors as well as kiters. It catches Atlantic groundswell and steady southwesterly wind, and supports a year-round cluster of established schools, making it the main hub for kitesurfing in North Wales.

Wind
| best months |
|
|---|---|
| season notes | Wales' most consistent kite wind comes from Atlantic low-pressure systems tracking through in spring and autumn; summer brings lighter, more thermal-influenced days, winter storms deliver the biggest (and coldest) wind and swell. |
| direction to shore | cross-shore in the prevailing SW, onshore on more westerly days |
| quality | gusty |
Water
| type | mixed |
|---|---|
| temp summer c | 16 |
| temp winter c | 9 |
| wetsuit | 3/2-4/3 in summer, 5/4 with boots, gloves and hood in winter |
| tides | Beach width changes substantially with the tide; sandy shallows at low-mid tide, shorebreak and less space at high tide |
| currents | Irish Sea tidal currents around the headlands and offshore rocks |
| standing depth | Shallow, gently shelving sand across much of Traeth Crigyll at low-mid tide |
Levels
| beginner | yes |
|---|---|
| intermediate | yes |
| advanced | yes |
| notes | Flatter, more sheltered sections and shallow sand suit beginners and schools; more exposed corners and Atlantic groundswell give advanced riders wave options |
Launch & crowd
| description | Wide sandy Traeth Crigyll beach with ample rigging space, particularly at low-mid tide |

| busy months |
|
| vibe | The most established kite scene in Wales, with a resident community of schools and riders alongside a popular holiday village (caravan parks, cafes, pubs) |
Monthly wind statistics
Station: Holyhead, UK (Weatherspark (NASA MERRA-2 reanalysis), ~12 km) — Windfinder has rhosneigr_anglesey and rhosneigr_valley windstatistics pages, but both are JS-rendered (no numbers in static HTML) and the live site 429'd on all fetch attempts (stats API needs an undisclosed auth token). Used Weatherspark MERRA-2 reanalysis for Holyhead (~12km NW, same Anglesey coast) as fallback. No Beaufort-probability metric available from this source.
