South Flats

South Flats is a free, easily accessible flatwater launch on the Laguna Madre side of South Padre Island, close to town, and is Pro Kite South Padre's primary teaching location thanks to good vehicle access and dry parking. It works in a wide range of wind directions and is rarely crowded, though (per the spot's original index listing) parts of it lack an easy downwind bail-out for less experienced riders in stronger conditions.

Monthly wind statistics

Station: South Padre Island, TX (Weatherspark (NASA MERRA-2 reanalysis), ~0 km) — Windfinder's south_padre_island windstatistics page exists but is JS-rendered (no numbers in static HTML) and the live site 429'd on every fetch attempt (stats API needs an undisclosed auth token). Used Weatherspark MERRA-2 reanalysis for South Padre Island as fallback, which covers Isla Blanca Park / North Flats / South Flats equally well since they are all within ~5km on the same barrier island. No Beaufort-probability metric available from this source.
