Walvis Bay Lagoon
Walvis Bay is Namibia's main port city and, thanks to the natural harbor sheltered by the Pelican Point sand spit, home to a calm, shallow lagoon that is one of southern Africa's best flat-water freestyle and beginner kite venues. The lagoon sits in a rare cold desert climate zone cooled by the Benguela Current, with near-constant strong wind, flamingo-filled shallows, and the Walvis Bay Kite Surf Center running lessons on-site; the world-famous Skeleton Bay wave (accessed along the same sand spit) is a short trip away for wave riders.

Wind
| best months |
|
|---|---|
| season notes | Namibia's central coast is windy nearly year-round thanks to the South Atlantic High and coastal thermal effects, with the southern-hemisphere spring/summer (Sept-March) generally the strongest and most consistent stretch. |
| avg knots | 15-30 |
| wind name | South Atlantic High-driven southerly (thermal-enhanced) |
| direction to shore | side-shore over the flat lagoon |
| quality | very steady, among the most reliable wind on the African continent |

Water
| type | flat |
|---|---|
| temp summer c | 17 |
| temp winter c | 14 |
| wetsuit | 4/3 or thicker year-round; the cold Benguela Current keeps water cold even in summer despite the desert setting |
| tides | lagoon shallows shift with tide; flamingo feeding areas and channels change extent through the tide cycle |
| currents | generally mild inside the sheltered lagoon compared to the open coast |
| standing depth | large areas of shallow, standing-depth flat water inside the lagoon, ideal for beginners and freestyle |

| notes | The sheltered lagoon flats are excellent for beginners and freestyle progression; stronger wind and the open bay toward Pelican Point suit more advanced riders, with Skeleton Bay nearby for wave specialists. |

Monthly wind statistics
Station: Walvis Bay Airport (windfinder.com, ~16 km) — Windfinder's own 'Walvis Bay Lagoon' station is dead ('was available at this spot, but is not available anymore or currently not reporting'); redirected to Walvis Bay Airport, ~16 km away. Annual averages: 8 kn, W, gusts 24 kn, daytime 20 C / nighttime 15 C. Airport readings likely understate the lagoon's local thermal/channel wind acceleration that makes it a kite destination - treat as a regional baseline only. Monthly Bft-probability/speed chart is JS-rendered and could not be captured as numbers in this session.

Hazards
- cold water requiring a proper wetsuit
- strong, sometimes very strong wind
- shipping/port traffic in parts of the bay
- flamingo and other protected bird habitat areas to avoid
Rules
- parts of the lagoon and shoreline are important flamingo/wader bird habitat; riders are expected to avoid disturbing roosting/feeding areas
Tips
- the lagoon's near-constant strong wind and flat water make it a favored freestyle training ground
- Skeleton Bay, one of the world's best barreling waves, is accessible along the same Pelican Point sand spit for a no-wind or surf day
