- The lagoon is the largest coastal lagoon system on the Portuguese coast (6.9 sq km) and was designated a Ramsar Wetland site on 2 February 2025
- Óbidos Castle was taken from the Moors in 1148 by King Afonso Henriques and has been gifted to Portuguese queens as a wedding present since 1210, earning the town the nickname 'Vila das Rainhas' (Town of the Queens)
