Sicily - Lo Stagnone

Lo Stagnone is a large shallow lagoon between Trapani and Marsala that has been one of Europe's premier flat-water windsurf and kite training/freestyle grounds for decades, set inside a protected nature reserve alongside the ancient island of Mozia and working salt pans. It suits progression-focused kiters and foilers who also want real Sicilian food, wine, and history on the doorstep; it is less suited to wave riders or anyone wanting a single walkable resort town, since the lagoon shore is a rural coast road strung with kite/windsurf centres rather than a town in itself. Trapani-Birgi airport sits almost between the lagoon and the two cities, making it an unusually convenient European kite destination to fly into, and Trapani or Marsala make far better bases than the lagoon shore for evenings out.

Editor's brief

Three facts orient everything here. One: this is a 7 x 3 km lagoon that is 20 cm to 1 m deep across the riding areas - the reason it is arguably Europe's best flat-water freestyle and learning water, and the reason a foil is dead weight (hydrofoil is flatly banned in the reserve by Ordinanza 01/2019). Two: the wind is thermal and back-loaded from June to September - glassy mornings, fill-in around 12:00-14:00, 12-22 knots building through the afternoon, with 69-79% of days rideable; March-June is the stronger synoptic season and Scirocco arrives in 3-4 day blocks at 30-40 knots. Three: it is not a resort, it is roughly 30 kite schools strung along the SP21 coast road inside a protected reserve, and the SP21 is exactly the road the Marsala-Birgi airport bus runs on. Logistics truth: you do not need a car. Trapani-Birgi is 10 minutes away, the Autoservizi Salemi bus does Marsala-airport in 30 minutes with about 20 weekday runs, taxis are a fixed EUR 35 to Trapani or Marsala, and school transfers are EUR 45 from Trapani for up to four people (EUR 130-170 from Palermo). Rent a car only for the Erice-Segesta-Selinunte-Marsala evenings loop. Bases, honestly: sleep lagoon-side if you came to kite - operator-brokered apartments run EUR 75-145/night, 200-500 m from the water, AC and WiFi, free centre access, booked through the school rather than an OTA. ProKite Alby Rondina (Via Torre Sances 392) is the on-site resort option; Baglio Vajarassa (from EUR 80, 15 minutes inland among vineyards) is the quiet one; Kite Hub still refuses to publish a rate. Sleep in Marsala (pop. 79,406) or Trapani old town if you want evenings that exist. Money: budget EUR 50-80/day for gear, EUR 40-60/hour for lessons, EUR 8-10/day for beach access, EUR 3/day storage, EUR 8/day for the helmet and vest you are legally required to wear, and EUR 15-20 if you need rescuing - because rescue here is a commercial per-use service, not a lifeguard. What nobody tells you: the launch is a procedure, not a beach - buoyed corridors 40 m wide at the shore, walk to 100 m, body-drag to 200 m, ride beyond 200 m, no powered launch from docks. The rash riders report is anemones in the warm shallows plus a silty, reedy bottom; leggings and booties solve it, aloe does not. There is no ATM on the lagoon road and no proper medical facility at the spot - the emergency department is on the far side of Marsala. And Trapani province is number one in Italy for power cuts, 11-plus interruptions per user per year, so ask your apartment about a generator before you count on charging pumps and laptops. Decisions to make: lagoon-side convenience versus Marsala/Trapani life; school package versus independent apartment plus day passes; and April-May/October, when accommodation is cheaper and the wind is synoptic but only 58-69% of days deliver, versus June-September heat, crowds and near-guaranteed afternoons. Whatever you choose, note that kiting here rests on a bathing-classification loophole renewed each season - Marsala ordinance n. 37 of 17 April 2026 - and Legambiente is still arguing it should not exist at all.

Getting there & getting around

airports
  • TPS - Trapani-Birgi - sits between Trapani and Marsala, close to the lagoon; mostly Ryanair routes across Italy/Europe
  • PMO - Palermo - about 1h-1h15 drive, more full-service/legacy airline options
transfersBus/shuttle operators (e.g. Autoservizi Salemi, Autolinee Lumia) connect Trapani-Birgi airport to Trapani and Marsala; a dedicated airport train station (Vincenzo Florio) was under construction as of 2026. The lagoon shore itself runs along the SP21 coast road between the two towns, best reached by car, taxi, or a transfer arranged with a kite school.
car neededUseful rather than absolute - several kite centres sit right on the lagoon road and buses link Trapani/Marsala, but a car makes it much easier to reach Marsala's centre, explore the salt pans, and do the Egadi Islands ferries on your own schedule.
road quirksFlat, fully paved coast road - no sand-track or 4x4 driving needed; watch for slow scooter/bicycle traffic and salt-pan workers' vehicles along the SP21.

Car

neededNo, not for a pure kite trip. The Salemi airport bus runs along the SP21 lagoon road between Marsala and Birgi, and operator-listed lagoon apartments sit 0.2-0.5 km from the kite centres, so a car-free week works if you stay lagoon-side. Rent a car (or take taxis at EUR 35 fixed to town) if you base in Marsala or Trapani, want the Erice / Segesta / Selinunte loop, or want to reach Marsala restaurants after the last bus.
rental where priceCar rental desks are in the Trapani-Birgi terminal (airport lists them at airgest.it/autonoleggio); no rates published by the airport. Bike is a real alternative on the flat coast road: KiteClub Marsala is 15 minutes by bike from Marsala and Kiteboarding Club Sicily rents e-bikes at EUR 25/day.
parking at spotFree parking at the kite centres is bundled into the daily service fee - Kiteboarding Club Sicily states the small daily fee covers facility access, pumps, showers, parking and staff assistance; KiteClub Marsala's EUR 8 day pass is the same idea. No paid public parking system on the lagoon road.

Where to stay

zones
  • name: Along the Stagnone coast road (Contrada Ettore Infersa area)
why: several kite/windsurf centres run on-site or partner accommodation right on the lagoon, some with lagoon-view rooms.
who for: kite-camp bookings and no-commute training trips
  • name: Marsala
why: a real city (~80,000 people) with restaurants, historic wine cellars/cantine, and a historic centre, about 15-20 minutes or a short bus ride from the lagoon.
who for: travelers who want food and wine culture beyond the spot
  • name: Trapani old town
why: a compact, walkable historic centre with denser nightlife/restaurants and the ferry port for the Egadi Islands, about 20-25 minutes from the lagoon.
who for: people who want a livelier evening base and easy island-hopping
better base nearbystay in Trapani or Marsala if you want evenings and food beyond kiting - the lagoon shore itself is a quiet rural road, not a town.
booking tipsKite/windsurf camp packages (school, gear, sometimes accommodation) are well established here given the spot's decades-long windsurf history. Book ahead for peak summer; Trapani and Marsala hotels have far wider independent booking availability than the handful of lagoon-front rooms.

How booking works here: Most lagoon-side beds are not on the usual OTA inventory - they are apartments owned or brokered by the kite centres and bundled with free centre access, so the booking path is the school's own site or WhatsApp, not Booking.com. Independent hotel supply is in Marsala (pop. 79,406) and Trapani. Book the school first, let it place you: that is also how you get the transfer (EUR 45 from Trapani) and the storage.

Practical

Cash & cards

atm in townNo bank or ATM is listed by any lagoon-side operator, and the kite zone is a rural reserve road of contrade (Contrada Spagnola, Birgi Vecchi, Torre Sances) with no commercial centre. Nearest banks and ATMs are in Marsala town - about 15 minutes by bike from the southern end of the kite strip per KiteClub Marsala, or a short drive/bus hop. Draw cash in Marsala or at the airport before settling in.
cash needed for
  • kite-centre day passes and storage (EUR 8 day pass, EUR 3/day storage at KiteClub Marsala)
  • per-use rescue fees (EUR 15-20)
  • the Mozia boat crossing and island ticket (EUR 12 adult)
  • small lagoon-road kiosks, beach bars and salt-pan cafes

Internet & working

coverage notesWiFi rather than mobile data is the practical answer on the lagoon: kite centres and essentially all operator apartments advertise free WiFi (kite-season.com lists WiFi on nearly every unit; IKSURFMAG reports free WiFi at all accommodations plus bars and restaurants), and the Stagnone Kite Apartment listing includes internet and private parking. No operator publishes speeds, and no source found identifies which Italian mobile network performs best on the lagoon road.

Power

outage frequencyTrapani province ranks #1 in Italy for power interruptions - over 11 interruptions per user per year (2025 distributor data).
official statsIl Sole 24 Ore analysis of 2025 electricity-distributor continuity-of-service data (ARERA framework); Trapani #1 nationally at 11+/year, Catania and Ragusa 3rd and 5th at 10+/year; average outage duration (excluding sub-3-minute blips) exceeds 1 hour; source: meridionews.it summary.
generator adviceGiven Trapani's #1-in-Italy outage ranking, ask any lagoon-front kite centre/accommodation 'avete un gruppo elettrogeno?' (do you have a generator?) - no operator-level confirmation gathered this session on who actually has backup power.

Health & safety

nearest hospitalOspedale 'Paolo Borsellino', Marsala (ASP Trapani) is the nearest hospital with an emergency department. Note its position: it marks the eastern edge of the Marsala urban area, i.e. on the far side of town from the lagoon, so an ambulance from the Stagnone kite zone crosses the whole city. The previously cited '20 km' figure could not be re-verified - the source it was attributed to (tabularasateam.it) no longer contains any hospital or rescue-access statement. Trapani's Ospedale Sant'Antonio Abate is the other option, at a similar distance north.
rescue serviceOn-water rescue at the lagoon is a paid, per-use commercial service, not a public lifeguard system: KiteClub Marsala prices a rescue at EUR 20 for day-pass holders and EUR 15 for members. Budget for it and ask your centre whether a rescue boat is actually on the water during your session hours.
mandatory safety gearHelmet and an approved flotation/impact vest are legally mandatory for kiting in the reserve under Ordinanza 01/2019, plus a working quick release and a line cutter. Duotone Pro Center and KBC both enforce it and rent the set (EUR 8/day at KBC). This is a checkable rule, not a school upsell.

Gear

rental day priceEUR 50-80 per day for a full kite set across the lagoon's schools (2026 listings): Kite Station and No Limits EUR 50, Flow Kite School / Follow The Wind EUR 60, Kite Me Up EUR 64, Kitesurfer Academy EUR 65, ProKite Alby Rondina / Stagnone Kitesurf / Sicily Kite School / Kite Days EUR 70, UNHOOKED EUR 70, Pro Kite Club EUR 80. Helmet and impact vest are a separate mandatory rental (EUR 8/day at Kiteboarding Club Sicily).
shops
  • Kite Hub Lo Stagnone (Marsala) - on-site kite centre with 6 rooms and a bar; pricing not published online, contact +39 349 6653644 / kitehublostagnone@gmail.com
  • Named lagoon centres with published 2026 pricing: ProKite Alby Rondina (Via Torre Sances 392, Cabrinha centre, on-site rooms + beach club, +39 347 537 3881), Kiteboarding Club Sicily / KBC (Birgi Vecchi, F-ONE, season 23 Mar-21 Nov, +39 327 9367561), KiteClub Marsala (Contrada Spagnola 66, +39 388 800 6209), Flow Kite School (kiteschoolsicily.com, +39 391 4122728), Sicily Kite School (Contrada Birgi Vecchio 390/F, +39 388 4288655), Duotone Pro Center Sicily, Stagnone Kitesurf, Torre Loopa Kite Zone, Kite Season (Czech-run base, 25 Apr-31 Oct).
storage lockersKiteClub Marsala: gear storage EUR 3/day on a day pass or monthly membership, EUR 30/month on the annual membership (EUR 160 one-off). Day pass EUR 8; monthly membership EUR 60; annual EUR 160.
what to bring vs rentRent the kite - schools stock 5-17 m2 quivers (Duotone, Cabrinha, F-ONE, Reedin), so flying your own quiver only pays on long stays. Bring: your own helmet and impact vest if you don't want to pay EUR 8/day (both are legally mandatory here, not optional), plus leggings and booties - the bottom is silty with reeds and the warm water carries anemones that cause skin reactions. Note that gear rental at several schools requires a level-3 kitesurf licence/IKO-VDWS card.
lesson priceRoughly EUR 40-60 per hour of instruction (Kitesurf Mazara EUR 31, Torre Loopa EUR 42.50, Flow EUR 43, Sicily Kite School EUR 46, Chili Kite / Kite Days / Kitesurfer Academy / Pro Kite Club EUR 50, ProKite Alby Rondina / Stagnone Kitesurf EUR 58, UNHOOKED / Follow The Wind EUR 60). Packages: Flow Kite School group course 9 h EUR 360 pp (min 2), private 6 h EUR 380, 'learn & hire' 9 h + 3 days rental EUR 490 pp; Kiteboarding Club Sicily beginner course from EUR 380, intermediate from EUR 320, 6-day all-in adventure camp from EUR 1,700; 360-Kite 8 days / 7 nights with accommodation and breakfast from EUR 630 (advanced), EUR 685 (beginner, 8 h group), EUR 910 (performance).

Fees & rules

park or eco feesNo entrance fee to the Riserva Naturale Orientata 'Isole dello Stagnone di Marsala' is charged or advertised by any operator or reserve source found. What you actually pay on site is a kite-centre day pass - EUR 8/day at KiteClub Marsala, EUR 10/day at Duotone Pro Center - which covers beach access, pumps, showers, parking and staff. The reserve's one ticketed attraction is Mozia island: EUR 12 adult, EUR 6 student, free under 5, including museum and archaeological area.
kite zone rulesBinding rules come from Ordinanza 01/2019 of the Capitaneria di Porto di Marsala (still the reference text cited by local schools in 2026). Inside the Riserva Naturale Orientata 'Isole dello Stagnone' free riding is allowed only beyond 200 m from shore (300 m outside the reserve). Getting out is staged: walk on foot to 100 m, body-drag between 100 m and 200 m, ride beyond 200 m. Launch and landing must happen inside marked corridors - minimum 40 m wide at the shoreline, widening to 100 m at 100 m out, marked with orange buoys no more than 20 m apart. Board-less kite teaching is permitted within the first 100 m. Launching from docks/piers with the kite powered in the window is prohibited. Mandatory kit: certified helmet worn at all times, Coast Guard-approved flotation device, working depower and quick-release leash, and a line-cutting tool.
seasonal closuresLagoon centres run roughly late March to late November and shut for winter: Kiteboarding Club Sicily 23 March - 21 November 2026, Flow Kite School March - November, Kite Season base 25 April - 31 October 2026. Winter still has wind (stronger, fewer days) but almost no infrastructure open on the lagoon road.
hydrofoil banHydrofoil use is always prohibited in the waters of the reserve (Ordinanza 01/2019, 'e sempre vietato l'uso dell'hydrofoil'), justified by the shallow depth. Duotone Pro Center independently states foiling is not viable in the lagoon and points foilers to other sites. Do not plan a foil trip here.
bathing ordinanceMarsala municipal ordinance n. 37 of 17 April 2026, in force 1 May - 31 October 2026, designates three stretches of coast as non-bathing, including roughly 3,600 m of the Stagnone lagoon between the Idroscalo and the Lega Navale (swimming, fishing and shellfish gathering banned there; municipal police enforce). This non-bathing classification is the mechanism that lets kitesurfing continue: the 2016 mayoral ordinance and the Capitaneria's bathing-safety ordinance n. 11/2016 permit kiting precisely because those zones are not reserved for bathing.
regulatory riskKiting's legal footing here is contested, not settled. Legambiente Marsala-Petrosino argues kitesurfing is incompatible with the Natura 2000 protected site, citing Environment Ministry and Regione Siciliana directives; the industry (about 30 schools in the lagoon) counters that a regional circular is not binding law. As of the last documented round the activity continued and the Capitaneria authorised the Italian national kitesurf championship in the lagoon (4-7 July 2024). Expect periodic press storms and possible new restrictions rather than a stable rulebook.
moneycards widely accepted in Trapani/Marsala; smaller lagoon-side kite centres and salt-pan cafes may prefer cash
sim internetItalian SIMs available at Trapani-Birgi or Palermo airports; normal Italian mobile coverage around the lagoon
languageItalian, with some Sicilian dialect locally; English spoken at kite/windsurf schools, more limited in small local businesses
safetygenerally safe, tourist-oriented area; no specific beach-theft pattern found in sources for the Stagnone lagoon itself - standard car/valuables precautions apply
healthhospitals in both Trapani and Marsala, roughly 15-25 minutes from the lagoon; the shallow, warm lagoon can see occasional jellyfish like much of the Mediterranean, no unusual hazards reported
visa hintSchengen area - standard Schengen rules apply for non-EU visitors
costs
level: mid

seasons beyond windThe kite/windsurf season overlaps Sicily's hot, dry, and crowded tourist summer; spring and autumn are milder, quieter, and cheaper for accommodation, Sicilian August brings domestic holiday crowds around Ferragosto (Aug 15), and winters are mild but many lagoon-side operators and some restaurants cut hours or close.

    Wind micro-knowledge

time of daySummer days are thermal and back-loaded: mornings are often glassy, the sea breeze fills in roughly 12:00-14:00 and strengthens through the afternoon, typically 12-22 knots (commonly 15-20). Plan lessons and sessions from midday onward and use mornings for Mozia, the salt pans or sleep. Synoptic days are different - Mistral (NW) and Scirocco (SE) systems blow all day and Scirocco arrives in 3-4 day sequences that can hit 30-40 knots.
seasonal migrationMarch-June brings the stronger, more consistent synoptic wind; June-September is the thermal-dominated peak with 69-79% wind probability per day; April-May and October sit at 58-69%; December-February has fewer windy days but stronger systems and almost everything closed. Operators claim ~300 windy days a year. Forecast note from local schools: the 9 km WRF grid on Windguru is the model that resolves the lagoon thermal - generic weather apps routinely miss it.

tide interplayDepth, not tide, is the governing variable: the lagoon is roughly 7 km by 3 km, averages 1-2 m at its deepest and drops to 20-30 cm in places, with about 1 m maximum across the riding areas. Sandy-to-silty bottom keeps it mirror-flat. Water 23-25 C in summer, air around 30 C. There is no meaningful tidal window to plan around, and no depth for foiling (which is also banned).
gust characterdescribed as capable of very strong, apparently clean Scirocco days (~40kt) rideable enough for pro mega loops, not just gusty chop
kite sizes riders bringriders report a wide range depending on the day - one used nothing larger than 7m over 8 kiting days and wished for a 15m on the lighter days; a pro rider quote references an 18.4m kite on a big-Scirocco day

    Itinerary idea

Classic plan: fly into Trapani-Birgi, spend 6-9 days kiting Lo Stagnone based in Marsala or Trapani, add a Favignana/Egadi Islands day trip or overnight by ferry from Trapani, and a day for Erice plus the Segesta and Selinunte ruins.
