Lo Stagnone
Lo Stagnone is a vast, shallow saltwater lagoon between Trapani and Marsala, enclosed from the open sea by the islands of Isola Grande and Santa Maria, sitting within the Stagnone di Marsala Nature Reserve. Near-daily thermal wind, water so shallow you can stand almost anywhere, and one of Europe's densest clusters of kite schools have made it the continent's best-known beginner and freestyle flat-water destination. Widely rated among the best kite spots in Europe.

|---|---|
| season notes | Reliable thermal wind builds most days April-October, typically filling in around midday-2pm and signaled by cloud forming over Monte Erice. Winter (Nov-Mar) brings stronger, gustier Mistral and Scirocco storm winds (30-40kt) favoured by advanced riders. |
| avg knots | 10-30 (thermal typically 12-22, southerly thermal can reach 20-25) |
| wind name | Thermal (N/NW) in summer; Mistral (NW) and Scirocco winter storm winds |
| direction to shore | cross-shore, varies by zone around the lagoon |
| quality | steady thermal, rarely gusty (squalls usually only 3-4kt above base) |
| typical kite sizes | 9-14m |
Water

| wetsuit | boardshorts/shorty Jun-Sep, 3/2 shoulder season, 4/3 or 5/3 in winter |

| notes | Ideal beginner and freestyle progression lagoon thanks to flat, walkably shallow water; advanced riders have freestyle zones further out and can find waves at San Teodoro beach nearby or ride winter storm winds. |
Launch & crowd
| description | Wide, shallow beach launches all along the lagoon shore with beach-boy assistance common at the schools/kite villages |
|---|---|
| rescue | Not generally needed - lagoon is walkably shallow; boat/rescue support available at the schools for the deeper/further zones |
| busy months |
|
| vibe | Very busy, international kite-camp scene with numerous schools (Sicily Kite School, Kite Lab, Duotone Pro Center Sicily, Flow Kite School, No Limits Kite among others); some corners of the lagoon stay noticeably quieter than others |
Monthly wind statistics
Station: Marsala (WeatherSpark (MERRA-2 reanalysis climatology), ~6 km) — Windfinder.com returned HTTP 429 (blocked) for every station tried this session, so no Beaufort-probability table could be sourced; used WeatherSpark's modeled climatology (avg wind speed + direction) instead, hence prob_ge_4bft_pct is null throughout. Marsala station is right at the edge of the Stagnone lagoon (~6 km), a good proxy. Note WeatherSpark's average-wind ranking (windiest in winter) reflects synoptic westerlies, not the strong local thermal (Maestrale/sea-breeze) that makes Apr-Oct the actual kiting season here per known_best_months in the batch — average wind speed alone underrates the reliable thermal afternoon wind.

Hazards
- very shallow in places (fin/board strikes)
- warm, low-circulation 'stagnant' water in the height of summer
- protected nature reserve - respect posidonia seagrass and marked channels
Rules
- Lagoon sits inside the Riserva Naturale Orientata dello Stagnone di Marsala; kiting is tolerated/established but riders should respect reserve zoning and seagrass beds
Tips
- Watch for the 'cap of cloud' over Monte Erice as the thermal indicator
- Thermal usually fills in around midday to early afternoon, so mornings are for sightseeing
- Kite village bars host sunset aperitivo and live music
- San Teodoro beach nearby has waves for wave-riding
